Politicians welcome early closure of landfill site

A landfill site has been closed for good ahead of schedule.

Grunty Fen Landfill, in Wilburton, Cambridgeshire, was "originally due to close at the end of the year", but due to "market conditions", FCC Environment, which runs it, said it had now stopped accepting commercial waste.

MP Charlotte Cane and councillors Lorna Dupre and Tom Hawker-Dawson said the closure had brought "relief for residents who have had to live with recurring fires, smoke, odour, litter, heavy lorry movements and the disruption".

It came after 27 fires took place over four months at the site on Pool Road.

The politicians said the site was closed on 20 July and called it a "significant milestone".
