Complaint

As the elements for consecration were brought to the altar, one of the commentators said “What an experience for these young people. The bread and wine, which will come to symbolise Christ's body and blood, they are presented to the altar for the celebration of the Eucharist”.  A viewer complained that the commentator had deliberately misrepresented Catholic belief, putting forward her own opinions instead.  The ECU considered the complaint in the light of the BBC’s editorial standards of accuracy.

Outcome

The commentator’s reference to symbolism conveyed an inaccurate reflection of the Catholic belief that the bread and wine, when consecrated, become the body and blood of Christ.  However, the ECU accepted the assurance of BBC News that this was a slip on the part of the commentator rather than a deliberate intrusion of her own opinion, as the latter would have been inconsistent with the respectful tone of her commentary.

Partly upheld
